Some such Butterfly be seen
On Brazilian Pampas -
Just at noon - no later - Sweet -
Then - the License closes -
Some such Spice - express and pass -
Subject to Your Plucking -
As the Stars - You knew last Night -
Foreigners - This Morning -

NOTES
This poem was written in 1862; during this year, Dickinson wrote
her famous letter to T.W. Higginson wherein she sent him four
poems and asked, "Are you too deeply occupied to say if my Verse
is alive?". This poem gives rich imagery of beautiful things (butterflies,
stars) that are glimpsed for the moment, or even for the night,
but are never possessed.
Brazilian Pampas: "the name given to the vast prairies
of the southernpart of Buenos Aryes in South America" (Webster's,
1856)
This poem can be found as #541 in Johnson, Complete Poems.
